Mayor Canan says city not involved in 'Police Yourself'

While students protest the university's "Police Yourself" campaign, Mayor Dan Canan said the city was not involved in the campaign's planning.

"We are not a part of the 'Police Yourself' campaign," Canan said. "I'm not even familiar with the specifics."

However, Heather Shupp, executive director of University Communications, said Canan met with Acting President Beverley Pitts before the campaign began.

"They talked prior to the launching of the campaign about education initiatives," Shupp said.

When the mayor and acting president met, the specifics of the "Police Yourself" campaign were not known, Shupp said.

Before the campaign was announced, Shupp said she tried to contact the Muncie Police.

"I tried to call the Muncie Police Department and I did not receive a call back," Shupp said. "I was unable to brief them before the press conference. Every attempt was made to let them know what we were doing."

Canan said the city's crackdown came after complaints from neighborhoods about house parties.

"That's what we're addressing," he said. "We made ourselves clear in the beginning."

Canan said the city tries to work with the Ball State community, especially with the Student Government Association.

"There has always been a gap between the community and the Ball State community as a whole," he said. "We strive to have good relations with the student body."
