Football team ends 21-game losing streak

Pitcher Bryan Bullington was picked No. 1 in the Major League Baseball draft

Oct. 7, 2000: The football team ends its national-worst 21-game losing streak with a 15-10 upset at Miami. Ball State goes on to win five its last seven games and finish 5-6.

Oct. 20, 2001: Thanks to Corey Parchman's 100-yard kick return for a touchdown with less than four minutes left, the football team upsets No. 25 Toledo 24-20 at Ball State Stadium. For a second-straight year, the south goal posts are torn down by students and dumped in the Duck Pond.

Nov. 2001: The men's basketball team opens its season at the Maui Invitational with wins over No. 3 Kansas and No. 4 UCLA. On the day before Thanksgiving, the Cardinals fall to defending national champion Duke in the Maui title game.

May 1, 2002: Led by All-America middle hitter Paul Fasshauer, the men's volleyball team advances to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in five years. Ball State falls in four sets to Pepperdine.

August 2002: Ball State names Lawrence "Bubba" Cunningham its new director of athletics. Cunningham, a former associate at Notre Dame, replaces Andrea Seger, who retired after seven years at the position and 27 years at the school.

Dec. 2, 2002: Just two days after completing his eighth season at the helm -- a 6-6 season -- Bill Lynch is fired as head football coach by Cunningham. Before Christmas, Michigan assistant and former Ball State player Brady Hoke is hired as the new coach.

June 4, 2003: Junior pitcher Bryan Bullington is selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the No. 1 overall pick in the Major League draft. Bullington is now one of five Ball State players to be selected in the first round.

July 16, 2003: President Blaine Brownell and athletics director Bubba Cunningham announce that Ball State will cut men's cross country, indoor track and outdoor track following the 2003-04 academic year.

Aug. 28, 2003: Illuminated by rented lights, the first night game in Ball State Stadium history is played with a record 23,549 fans in attendance. It is also Hoke's first game as head coach, and the Cardinals throttle Indiana State 31-7.

Nov. 1, 2003: The women's cross country team wins its first MAC title. Individually, Jill Scully is runner-up, Crystal Meeks takes 10th and Sue Parks is named Coach of the Year.
