[three stars]USHER 'CONFESSIONS'Arista RecordsFor such a talented young performer, Usher sure does have a one-track mind. On his self-titled debut, he swooned you with his boyish charm. On 'My Way," he asked you for your number. On '8701,' he lingered you into the bedroom and made you commit. And now, with 'Confessions,' all Usher can find the time to do is cheat and then apologize for cheating. What ever happened to singing about your ride?Of course, there"s the beguiling synth anthem 'Yeah!,' and you"ll find a couple other upbeat, catchy tracks in 'Throwback' and 'Caught Up.' Otherwise you"re hard pressed to find anything other than trademark Usher slow jams, which I suppose is good for Usher fans, but the rest of us are yawning. 'Simple Things' is a song about spending more time with your girl, 'Bad Girl' is about how he likes girls to be able to shake it, and 'That"s What It"s Made For' is about... well, you know. I"m quoting here: 'You know pimpin" ain"t easy for all my chicks in the club who knows how to cut a rug... Ah, I want to take one to the restroom.' No wonder he looks so fit. He gets his exercise!Unless you"re having a lot of sex, this album is just hard to relate to, and unless you"re really into Usher, this album is just hard to listen to. Still, 'Confessions' proves that he"s still the second most-talented male artist in R&B -- next to Babyface, of course. Enjoy it while you can; his music will probably start losing quality once the paternity suits start coming in.-- Gregory TwifordSOUNDS LIKE: A young R. Kelly just itchin" for a sex scandal
