Bush fire leads to building evacuation

Students, faculty and staff evacuated the Teachers College Wednesday afternoon because of a small fire on the building's south side.

The University Police and Muncie Fire departments responded to the call at 2:24 p.m., Robert Fey, associate director of public safety, said.

The fire in the shrubs near the building's doorway was most likely started by a cigarette butt, and the fire's smoke set off the fire alarm, UPD Corporal Al Tank said.

"Fire in mulch beds and shrubs is common," Fey said. "If conditions are right, dry and windy, it can happen."

Both Fey and Tank said the combination of doorways, smokers, shrubs and mulch can lead to fires.

Fey said the UPD will not further investigate the fire.

"It's done," Fey said. "Fires like this are not unusual."
