BASEBALL Cards well-rested

Both of Ball State's midweek games were canceled due to poor weather

The Ball State men's baseball team will head into its series against Western Michigan this weekend with no break in play against Mid-American Conference schools.

The team, which plays its nonconference games during the week, had rain cancellations against IPFW and Dayton and was unable to get a game in.

"That concerns me a little bit, not getting to play at all midweek. Although at this point in the season it may work as a rest up a little bit," head coach Greg Beals said. "We're going to try to do some stuff in practice a little bit more full speed than we normally would since we didn't play this week."

The Cardinals head into the weekend with an 18-15 record (8-4, MAC) and are tied for first in the West division. Since dropping two of three in their MAC-opener series against Bowling Green, the team has won every MAC series.

Western Michigan comes in with a 14-18 record (4-5, MAC) and with a similar situation as the Cardinals in that they have also not played a midweek game.

"I think we match up well against Western Michigan, and if we play the way we're capable of playing then I don't see any reason why we can't win this series," Beals said. "What we need to do is to keep playing good and keep winning series here in the conference play."

Senior starting pitcher Mike Johnston is set to open the series, followed by sophomore Joe Ness and senior Andy Anderson in the rotation.

Along with it being a conference game, this weekend's action becomes all the more important as it takes place on the Cards' home field, Ball Diamond.

"We're coming off a weekend where we won a series against Central Michigan and put ourselves at the top of the division," Beals said. "It's important that we keep that going, have another good series and keep ourselves on top of the division, especially at home, because it's important to play well and win at home."

The series is set to begin at 3 p.m. Friday followed by 1 p.m. games on Saturday and Sunday.
