WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD Sophomore sprinter wins 400; Cardinals start season strong

Winfrey wins, Scully takes second for Ball State at FSU Relays

Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Mid-American ConferenceIndoor Championships, the women's track and field team began anewwith its first meet of the outdoor season last Wednesday, theFlorida State Relays.

The FSU Relays consisted of top teams from across the nation,including Florida A&M, Florida State, Florida, Kentucky,Louisville, Michigan and Georgia Tech, among others.

A first-place finish by sophomore Crystal Winfrey in the400-meter dash highlighted the meet for Ball State. Winfrey wonwith a time of 54.65, more than two-tenths of a second ahead of thenearest competitor.

Winfrey was also a part of the 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams, bothof which took fourth place with times of 1:38.51 and 46.58,respectively.

Another top finish came from sophomore Jill Scully, who tooksecond in the 5000-meter run at 17:02.39.

Scully, along with teammates Amanda Ponsot, Rose Lehe and NicoleHartford, also competed in the 4x1500 relay team that grabbed thirdplace with their time of 19:17.00.

Sophomore Jennifer McCoy had one of the best all-aroundperformances with her third in the heptathlon. She finished with4945 points, only 55 points from regionally qualifying for the NCAAChampionships.

McCoy also placed second in the long jump with a mark of 18-111/4. The Cards showed their depth in the long jump as freshmenAmanda Barnhart and Terri Abraham followed close behind with fourthand fifth-place finishes, respectively.

Barnhart took fourth with a mark of 18-10, while Abraham wasonly 3/4 inches off that mark at 18-9 1/4.

In the high jump, sophomore Kristina Hervey's mark of 5-4 1/4tied for fifth place with four other contestants. FreshmanChristina Poulson took fourth place in the 100-meter open whilejunior Sarah Huddleston was third in the 10000-meter run at37:49.87.

The Cardinals resume their outdoor season April 3 as they travelto Notre Dame for the Notre Dame Open.
