WOMEN'S GOLF Coach expecting improvement this week

Cards have placed 12th and 10th in past two tournaments

After knocking off some of the rust in the first two tournaments, the women's golf team looks to play better this weekend at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.

In Ball State's previous tournament action this year, the team placed 12th out of 16 teams at the Lady Herd Classic and finished 10th out of 18 teams at the NIU Snowbird Classic.

"As a team, we didn't play very well," fourth-year coach Shelley Sanders said.

Following the long winter off-season, the team is getting used to competing again. "We're just kind of getting back into it," Sanders said.

In the first two meets, the team was led by sophomore Carmine Bodine, who tied for 24th and 14th, respectively. In the fall season, Bodine had the team's lowest single-round score, a 74.

Two other sophomores, Katie Sundberg and Ali Meyer, also competed in the team's first two events. Meyer led the team with the lowest-scoring average during the fall season and became the first individual medalist in Ball State women's golf history at the 2003 Youngstown State Fall Invitational. Sundberg finished second on the team at the Lady Herd Classic after shooting the Cards' best final-round score of 78.

"I didn't hit the ball that well in the first two rounds," Sundberg said, "but I had a decent round the last day."

Freshman Amber Uphaus placed third on the team at the Lady Herd Classic, and one of the team's four seniors, Lisa Robertson, finished third for the team at the NUI Snowbird Classic.

Robertson, Hattie Pavlechko, Sara Padgett and Laura Adkins provide the senior leadership for the Cards.

"The seniors have been around the longest, know the most and have always provided good leadership," Sanders said.

Heading into the tournament this weekend, Sundberg has a couple of personal goals in mind.

"I'd like to play solid mentally, shoot in the 70s and just play better overall," she said.

As far as the team's outlook for this weekend, Sanders is confident that the team will shoot better than its first two showings.

"I'm encouraged at what I saw toward the end of break," she said. "Everyone was striking the ball a lot better."
