THE TEMPORAL FRONT: War for peace cannot be ignored

Every time I see someone calling for peace, it makes me want tovomit.

Peace is a beautiful concept. It is also a blatant illusion thattoo many cling to as though it can actually be achieved throughappeasement and inaction.

In 1938, Neville Chamberlain thought he and Joe Kennedy hadachieved peace in Munich. They appeased Hitler by allowing him tocontinue his campaign of conquest. Chamberlain believed they hadachieved "peace for (their) time."

Chamberlain's "peace" brought the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor, WorldWar II and countless instances of man's cruelty towards man. Thesewere the dividends of not addressing a problem at its outset butrather leaving it to someone else to deal with it.

For more than two years now, our nation's leftist element hasbeen screaming for peace to be achieved in our time. They haveproposed that by simply allowing inaction to be our policy, wewould be far safer than by taking action against those who mean usharm. They would have stood with Chamberlain in Munich andcheered.

In February 1993, the first hint of Al Qaeda's intentions wereshown in the bombing of the World Trade Center. President Clintonattempted to use the legal system to apprehend and prosecuteterrorists. He chose against using military action to respond tothis attack.

In October 1993, Clinton was again faced with the challenge ofpseudo terrorism. When American troops were killed by rebels inMogadishu, Somalia, Clinton chose to withdraw troops rather thandeploy additional forces to secure the war torn society. Mogadishuemboldened Osama bin Laden, convincing him that America was nothingbut a "paper tiger."

Four more times during his presidency, Clinton chose not to dealwith terrorists using legitimate military force. Instead, he issuedthe edict that terrorism was to be tackled like any other commoncrime: through the justice department.

Bill Clinton was president during a time of "fake" peace thatlooked nice and safe on the surface, but under the shiny veneer oftomahawk missile strikes and minimal troop deployments, was brewinga far deadlier conflict. The tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, can be laidsquarely at the feet of President Bill Clinton. He bought "peace inour time" with the blood of 3,000 innocent American civilians.

This is the cost of fake peace and inaction. You can relax anddo nothing, and simply ignore any problem. You can ignore bombingsand assassinations and violations of peace treaties. You can try touse the short arm of the law to apprehend international terrorists. You can appease, or you can take action. You can overthrow despoticregimes that brutalize their people, or you can ignore them. Youcan work towards equality for all people, or you can have relationswith governments that hold the opposite to be true.

John Kerry, like Clinton before him, believes that the war onterror should be more of an intelligence gathering and lawenforcement operation. Just what we need, some more of thatwonderful appeasement-generated "peace."

The only true peace is "peace through strength," warningwould-be terrorists that there will be consequences for choosing tokill the innocent and defy the civilized world.
