STUDENT'S DEATH 'A HOMICIDE'

Sophomore, Carmel native Karl Harford discovered in the back seat of his car

A Ball State student who was killed this weekend was found inthe back seat of his car on Muncie's east side Sunday.

"This is a homicide investigation," James Clevenger, DelawareCounty coroner, said.

Karl Harford, 20, a sophomore from Carmel, was found in an alleybehind 1923 E. Hines Road, Deputy Police Chief Terry Winterssaid.

Clevenger said an officer discovered Harford's body afterarriving to tow the car Sunday afternoon. The person who drove thevehicle knocked over a telephone box, drawing the phone company'sattention.

Clevenger would not say how Harford had been killed or if anywounds were found on the body. He is waiting for the results of anautopsy which will be performed today.

Sophomore Jacquelynn Rich said she remembers Harford from CarmelHigh School where she said he was on the chess team. SophomoreKelly Fisher has also been in school with Harford since elementaryschool and said she remembers him as always being really quiet.

Fisher said Harford played the tuba in the junior high schoolband.

Sophomore Luisa Boehme said Harford was really friendly.

"I would have never thought this would happen to him," Boehmesaid.

Winters said Harford had been at a house party Saturday night at1010 W. Abbott St.

Clevenger said Harford's body had probably been left in thealley across town early Sunday morning.

"We don't believe the crime happened there," Clevenger said.

Winters said there was evidence at the crime scene to indicatethat Harford's death was a homicide. He declined to elaborate.

He and his officers spent Sunday night interviewing seven oreight witnesses from the party Harford had attended the nightbefore.

No one living at the house where the party was held wouldcomment Sunday night.

Ball State officials were still gathering information and werebrief in their comments Sunday evening.

"Certainly, when it's one of our students we're saddened,"Executive Director of University Communications Heather Shupp said."Our thoughts are with the family."
