SOFTBALL Cards for third straight victory

BSU tries to keep improving offensively against Butler

Coming off back-to-back wins to end its appearance at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic Tournament last weekend, the softball team hopes to keep the win streak going as it faces the Butler Bulldogs today in a doubleheader.

The Cardinals (4-15) showed improvement on offense, coach Terri Laux said, as the team connected for seven hits against Georgia Southern and nine against Middle Tennessee State, tying the team high for the season.

Senior Kris Burdine came up big for the Cardinals in those two wins, connecting for two hits against both Georgia Southern and Middle Tennessee State. Against MTSU, Burdine also scored a run and added an RBI.

"That's something we expect out of her the entire year," coach Terri Laux said. "She's done a lot for the program, and we expect her to continue what she's doing."

Before those games, the Cardinals finished 1-7 over the previous week while in Atlanta and the Evansville Tournament.

Despite that record, Laux believes her team improved over that stretch. Now, she said, everyone is getting involved on the offensive side by getting more players in scoring position. She also believes the underclassmen are getting more comfortable playing at a Division 1 level.

The Bulldogs (4-14) are coming off doubleheader losses to Evansville on Thursday. Butler gave up a total 20 runs on 24 hits during the day, falling 9-1 and 11-2. Angie Johnson hit a home run in the first game for the Bulldogs. Entering today's game, the Bulldogs stand sixth in the Horizon League standings.

Laux called Butler an improving team and said the Bulldogs' strength is in their hitting, with third basemen Melissa Lemrick and outfielder Cameo Wrasse leading the way.

"They come out swinging the bat and don't hold anything back," Laux said.

Ball State and Butler squared off three times during the fall schedule, with Butler winning twice. The Bulldogs won the first meeting, 3-2, and won the second game of a double header five days later.

Laux's goal for the season remains the same -- to become a consistent team -- and she reiterated that heading into the Butler game.

"Tomorrow will be a good gauge with where we're at with that," she said.
