Officers catch final person involved in student's death

Police have arrested the third suspect for the shooting death ofBall State sophomore Karl Harford.

Damien Sanders, 22, was found in a Days Inn motel on 38th Streetand High School Road in Indianapolis at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Chief of Police Joe Winkle said U.S. marshals found Sandersalone in the motel room and he did not resist arrest.

Sanders was arrested for a murder warrant and armed robbery.

U.S. marshals took Sanders to Anderson where Muncie police metthem, bringing Sanders back to City Hall for questioning.

Police could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

Harford, a resident of Carmel, was found dead in the back seatof his car March 7 in an alley behind 1923 E. Hines Road. Winkletold the DAILY NEWS that Sanders and two other suspects robbedHarford of $2 before shooting him in the head.

Brandon Patterson, 18, and a 14-year-old juvenile were arrestedMarch 8, after Patterson turned himself in.

Patterson is being charged with murder and armed robbery.

The juvenile is being charged with assisting a criminal.

Winkle said he could not say whether Sanders was the one whoshot Harford, but according to an affidavit, Patterson said he wasnot the one who shot and killed Harford.

Harford met the three suspects at a house party on Abbott Streetand offered them a ride home.

According to the affidavit, Patterson said the three planned torob Harford while in the car.

A video tape recording of the party Harford and the threesuspects had attended allowed Muncie police to determine who thethird suspect was, Sgt. Allen Williams told the DAILY NEWS.

Sanders' record includes seven prior arrests for theft andunderage drinking.

Throughout the investigation Winkle said they had followednumerous leads and had speculation that Sanders would turn himselfin.

"We're pretty excited we found him," Winkle said.
