Greek members unite for week's events

Schedule includes community service, Variety Show

Members of the greek community will participate in a Kids Carnival at the Muncie Boys & Girls Club on Wednesday. Groups organized by the Greek Week Steering Committee will set up booths for kids to enjoy.

Melissa Kish, Greek Week director, said the carnival will be the finale to a week of events the Boys &Girls Club has organized and groups will be organizing events such as a Duck Pond and a Cup-Cake Walk.

The carnival is only one of the events planned for the annual Greek Week, which begins today.

Rob Turning, assistant director of student organizations and activities, said this week is a chance for chapters to show greek unity.

"They've been kind of cocooned within their own chapters all year," Turning said.

Laurel Peffer, chapter relations chairwoman, said the goal of the week is allow chapters to interact more and learn from each other.

Chapters under the Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Council will be participating.

Turning said their is roughly 1,500 members of the greek community.

However, Kish said anyone can attend.

Kish said the week will allow people outside the greek community to get a glimpse at greek life.

Turning said Greek Week has been recognized at Ball State for more than 20 years.

The week evolved from competition between fraternities and sororities, Turning said.

At each event, points will be rewarded to members who attend or participate. At the end of the week, the group with the most points will be recognized at Grand Chapter.

Grand Chapter will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday in Emens, and will acknowledge chapters who have gone above and beyond its duty, Peffer said.

Tuesday at a Scholarship Tea reception, Greek Week will also congratulate greek members who made the dean's list during the fall semester.

A Variety Show will be on Thursday, including acts from greek members. Kish said it will be a good show this year with 11 acts. The acts will include people singing and dancing, Kish said.

Anyone attending can get in by paying $2 or $1 with a canned good. All can goods collected will be donated to A Better Way.

Peffer said attendance at the events varies but the Variety Show and Grand Chapter seem to be the most popular.

Kish said the Steering Committee just hopes people attending the events have fun.
