CD REVIEW: The Innocence Mission

THE INNOCENCE MISSION "BEFRIENDED"

Badman Records

The Innocence Mission has been around since 1982, and "Befriended" is the latest of a long line of wonderfully calm records featuring husband and wife Karen and Don Peris' flawless songwriting, and Mike Bitts' bass backbone. Songs like "Martha Avenue Love Song" and "Sweep Down Early" provide the perfect soundtrack to a romantic walk in the rain, while "I Never Knew You From The Sun" and "Beautiful Change" should be saved for a quiet night inside. Karen's vocals shine through each track with the same wispy range of The Sundays' Harriet Wheeler, while the piano, acoustic guitar and bass in the background are as flimsy, yet refined as an over-produced relaxation tape (but in a good way). Any fan of soft music should look no further than this album for salvation.

In between each release, the three members mysteriously disappear, making only a few public appearances and leaving very little room for publicity. Perhaps it gives them time to rest or perhaps writing beautiful music isn't their day job. It doesn't matter; we're just happy to be a part of it.

Four out of five stars.
