CD REVIEW: Rainer Maria

RAINER MARIA "ANYONE IN LOVE WITH YOU (ALREADY KNOWS)"

Polyvinyl Records

After releasing 2002's "Long Knives Drawn," one of the best indie releases of the year, the trio of Rainer Maria spent the majority of the next year touring the country's smaller venues. The "Anyone in Love with You" package is a sampled look at this tour. The DVD displays their entire Carrboro, N.C. show, while the CD features performances from Chicago, Seattle and New York City. From the floor of a crowded indie club, the show probably looks a lot more intense than it does from a comfortable chair at home, but they still know how to put on a show using nothing more than their instruments. Caithlin De Marrais' vocals take on a whole new layer of intensity on stage, while guitarist Kyle Fisher jumps, dances and shouts, and drummer William Kuehn rips his set apart like it's their first paying gig. Particular moments that stick out are the DVD opener "Mystery & Misery" and the audio performances of "Long Knives" and "Thought I Was" from their homecoming shows in Madison. The replay value of this set is quite low, but the initial hour and a half engagement is filled with muscle and passion.

Three out of five stars.
