ALICIA KEYS "THE DIARY OF ALICIA KEYS"
J Records
The album starts out with a thirty-second piano solo -- straight out of the classical section -- but once Alicia says "drop it," it's pure rhythm and blues the rest of the way. That fresh teenage sparkle she had on her debut has been replaced (only two years later) with the brown-eyed experience of a Motown soul goddess. This album sets the listener into the smokiest bar in town, especially with tracks like "Diary," "Dragon Days," and "When You Really Love Someone." And dear God, "If I Ain't Got You" is heaven on Earth. The old soul influences are definitely in there. Although, no offense to Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, or Mary Wells, but a comparison is tricky with the feeling and attitude Alicia brings to the plate. It's all elegance, and it's been nothing but underappreciated. All hail Miss Keys!
