Business college dean might leave for University of Louisville position

School looks for administrative experience

The dean position in the University of Louisville's College of Business and Public Administration, for which a Ball State dean is a finalist, could be filled shortly, a Louisville professor said.

John Williams, one of two leaders of the college's search committee, said the committee will meet this month to review the candidates and make its recommendation to Louisville's provost, who will make the final decision.

Williams said once the committee's recommendation is made, the provost's decision could take anywhere from one week to one month.

Lynne Richardson, dean and professor of marketing in Ball State's Miller College of Business, is one of four finalists for the position at Louisville. The group of finalists also includes professors and deans from Wichita State, Wake Forest and Texas Tech universities.

Williams said the four finalists were selected from an original group of 90 candidates.

"We were looking for administrative experiences as a dean," Williams said. "They all are currently or have been deans."

Finalists' visits to the Louisville campus wrapped up last week. Richardson, the first to visit, was there from Feb. 18 to 20, and she said her visit was a "very positive" experience.

"I interviewed well, I think," Richardson said.

She said the visit consisted of a regular interview as well as an opportunity to meet with faculty and staff members.

"You always want to take a look at opportunities," Richardson said. "There's every chance I might not be leaving, but I might be."

Richardson, who became dean of the Miller College of Business in 2001, also spent three years as associate dean and professor of marketing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She became dean after 11 years of teaching at UAB.

Richardson was elected in February to the board of directors for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, a leading accrediting agency for business administration and accounting programs.

This is the second time in two years Louisville's College of Business and Public Administration has attempted to name a new dean. Three finalists were chosen from a pool of 44 candidates in a search that began in May 2002. However, the university rejected each of those finalists in January 2003. The new search began in September.

A press release issued by the college in February stated, "Key community leaders have said that the new dean is the Louisville business community's most important hire in 2004."
