Burton: Weekend was quiet

About 1,100 students attended UPB's Luau Late Night Saturday

The University Police Department made three arrests and 16 citations this past weekend. However, Police Chief Gene Burton said the weekend was unusually quiet.

"It just didn't have the foot traffic like a normal weekend," Burton said.

The police responded to eight loud party calls and four noise complaints, with seven of those calls before 11 p.m. Burton said the early calls were because of the weekend's warm weather.

"It's not uncommon on nice days," he said. "We don't usually have early calls during the winter."

University Police did respond to calls from the residence halls as well, he said.

Burton attributed the quiet weekend to the combination of the university's "Police Yourself" campaign and the University Program Board's events.

Sophomore Heidi Hansard, UPB Late Night director, said about 1,100 students attended Saturday's Luau Late Night.

"It was more than the usual crowd," Hansard said. "I think the crackdown has some effect on the minors."

Hansard said she overheard some students saying that they normally party on Saturday nights, but that they decided to go to the Luau instead because of the extra law enforcement.

Burton said the UPD will continue to have two additional police officers during the afternoon shift and four extra for the midnight shift on weekends.

The university has not hired additional police for the weekends, instead the officers are working overtime, he said.

The University Police patrol on and off campus. Burton said the weekend officers are being more visible earlier in the evenings to help prevent arrests and citations later in the night.

Pere Dorsuleski, 20, was arrested on charges of battery and minor alcohol consumption. Kevin Mitchell, 19, and Kyle Cook, 19, were both arrested for resisting arrest and minor alcohol consumption.

"I would expect to see more activity in the neighborhoods this weekend because more students will be staying here, and the weather is supposed to be nice," Burton said.
