OUR VIEW Separate Responsibilities

AT ISSUE: Current SGA officers are competiting against each other in SGA election

The two slates competing for the Student Government Association executive board will have their first debate this evening.

This is the first time the candidates will be addressing the entire campus about their stances on issues and the goals they have for Ball State.

But when the debate is over, some slate members must return to their current SGA roles.

This year's election will be unique because of the composition of the slates.

On the Manship Slate, current president Jayson Manship is running for a second term, backed up with Meghan Newlund, SGA pro-tempore as the Manship Slate's vice presidential candidate.

The two are used to combining forces as current SGA officers, but there is a twist.

Ben Tietz, SGA's current vice president is also vying for Manship's spot. Tietz also works with Newlund and Manship.

Elections are March 1 and 2. Actual inauguration comes weeks after.

This means that despite the results, one or two of these SGA officers will be out of a job in a few weeks.

Regardless of how the winning slate wants to run SGA, the officers still have a month to work together.

As the campaign continues, SGA senators are not allowed to wear or display any election propoganda at senate meetings. The candidates should hold themselves to the same standard. Despite SGA election opponents, the students still need a viable governing body for the next few weeks.

The slates running should do their best to keep current responsibilities apart from this race.

In the end, the only thing that should really matter to these SGA members is the needs of the students.
