GYMNASTICS Ball State hosts Illinois and Bowling Green at Irving Gym tonight

The Ball State gymnastics team will host its second home meet of the season at 7 p.m. in Irving Gym. The triangular meet features undefeated Illinois (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) and conference opponent Bowling Green (2-1, 1-0 Mid-American Conference).

Ball State (3-2, 1-2 MAC) is coming off its first dual match loss of the season to Central Michigan. The Cardinals tallied a 191.925 in the meet, their second lowest total this year.

The low team score was mainly due to falls on the beam. Only three gymnasts were able to stay on the beam, while three others had a fall.

Coach Mary Roth said those troubles just happen. -á

"(Beam) is always the nemesis of every team," she said.

Although the Cardinals have struggled on beam the past two meets, Roth is not worried.

"We have a good beam squad," Roth said.-á"Hopefully (the high number of falls) won't happen again."

Roth was not as disappointed with the beam as she was with the overall team score being low.-áThe sub-192 total will likely not be counted toward the team's chance at advancing to the NCAA Regionals. The best six of the 12 scores will be averaged to determine what schools get to advance.

While they're looking to fix problems on beam, the Cardinals have been doing much better on the floor exercise. Against Central Michigan, both Courtney Vojtasek and Jenna Tarkington set career-highs on the floor, while Kelli Davis matched her career-best.

Ball State will likely need good performances by everyone this weekend, as the team faces two challenging opponents. Illinois has yet to lose, while Bowling Green comes in having knocked off previously undefeated North Carolina.
