The winter break for the women's basketball team included not only wins and losses, but several individual accomplishments.
Highlighting the break were the performances of senior Jessica Reiter, who became the 15th player in Ball State history to reach the 1,000 career scoring mark against Marshall, and junior Kate Endress, who in the same game and only minutes later became the 16th player to enter that club. Endress was also named a Mid-American Conference player of the week over break.
Ball State 83 Chicago State 74
The Cardinals ended a three-game losing streak against Chicago State after four players scored in double figures. The Cardinals were once again led by Endress, who put up 25 points and pulled down the team high nine rebounds. Reiter had 18 points, while both senior Johna Goff and sophomore Dana Collins had 11. Goff's 11 points also came with her career-high 10 assists, that allowed her to get the first double-double of her career.
Head coach Tracy Roller called the game a good confidence builder and also praised sophomore Rachelle Hampton who stepped up to score eight points and get six rebounds.
"Exactly when we needed to we finished it out, which we've had some problems with in the past," Roller said. "I felt really good about that win."
Ball State 62 Indiana 71
In their final non-conference game of the season, the Cardinals defense was able to hold Indiana's leading scorer to only 11 points, but they let a 6-foot-7 freshman score 24 points and get 16 rebounds to lead Indiana in the 71-62 win.
Endress ended the game one point shy of her career high in points with 28 and Reiter ended the game two rebounds shy of her career high in rebounds with 16. The Cardinals had season lows from the the field (31.7 percent) and charity stripe (63.6 percent).
"Unexpectatly a freshman came out of the woodwork and killed us," Roller said. "We had some opportunities at the end of the game to win, but again didn't take care of the ball."
Ball State 71 Marshall 63
After winning two straight MAC regular season championships, the Cardinals began defense of those against Marshall.
Reiter had the game high in points with 17, Endress put up 15, and Goff and Hampton each had 12. Goff scored her most important points of the game when she hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to send the Cardinals on the way to the win.
"It was a big statement game for us," Roller said. "That was a big win."
Ball State 72 Bowling Green 70
The Cardinals kept their conference unbeaten streak going with a 72-70 win over Bowling Green. Endress had the game-winner off a jumper with 15 seconds left.
Ball State had four players in double figures. Endress had the team high 23 points, Reiter and Goff each had 13 and senior Julie Just had 10. Reiter also had a double-double performance after pulling down 12 rebounds.
"It was a combination of getting the ball in the hands of our go-to player, which in the past we've sometimes had trouble with and getting defensive stops," Roller said.
