OUR VIEW: Keept informed

AT ISSUE: Ball State community must assume responsibility for making educated decisions

The beginning of a new year drives people to make resolutions to change their behavior. As Ball State University begins a new semester, students, faculty, staff and alumni should include an important resolution: to stay informed about events to come.

The closing of the Fall semester still left the following doors open:

The Michael McKinney shooting left most students, staff and Muncie residents in disagreement about law enforcement regarding the training and hiring of police officers and the distribution of alcohol. As Ball State and Muncie recover from the tragedy, a detailed look should be taken at how and if these policies should change.

The search for a new president should also bring Ball State's most serious issues to the surface. President Blaine Brownell will leave the university at the end of January. The search committee is responsible for finding a qualified individual to take Brownell's place. Students, faculty and staff must take time to decide what Ball State needs from its leadership. When those views solidify, they must be voiced.

As campus construction ensues, Student Government Association members are pushing for a new structure. SGA members suggest a building should be erected between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College to serve as a new student center. SGA suggests that the L.A. Pittenger Student Center is in an inconvenient location and outdated facility. Funding for this structure must originate in private donations. Students preparing for graduation and alumni should consider if they are willing to donate funds for this structure.

These issues and more will hold our attention for the next four months. Every one is important to the future of this university. Finding the ideal solution is the mutual responsibility of everyone in the Ball State community.
