MEN'S BASKETBALL Freshman Yates academically ineligible

Freshman Darren Yates was ruled academically ineligible Wednesday before the game against Central Michigan, and will miss the rest of the 2004 season.

Yates, a shooting guard from Indianapolis Pike High School, played in 10 of Ball State's first 11 games. He averaged 3.0 points and 1.0 rebounds in 10.4 minutes. Seven of his nine field goals were 3-pointers.

It was not specified whether Yates did not meet the required 1.8 grade point average or failed to pass a required class.

"It was not for lack of effort (on Darren's part)," coach Tim Buckley emphasized. "It's just one of those things. He can practice. He'll be involved in all that he can."

Buckley did not anticipate major changes in lineups or minutes played, but said both point guards (Peyton Stovall and Jesse McClung) could play at the same time.

"I think we'll stick the rotation the way we've had it," he said. "(Freshman) Skip Mills will probably get more minutes now that we don't have Darren available. That also allows us to play Jesse on the wing with Peyton if we need to." 112_:+â-+W+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW+â-ïW--¦,+â-+ 'S_men's bball briefDNEditorial112+â-+h.-º2AUDT
