The Wrens : The Meadowlands
4 1/2 stars out of 5
The Wrens are relatively unknown, but the band has been makingsome of the most inspired, creative pop music during the lastdecade. The New Jersey-based quartet has only released threefull-length albums since 1994, though each has seen criticalacclaim accumulate in the face of poor commercial success. Not aband to care, The Wrens' new release, "The Meadowlands," continuesin such a tradition. "The Meadowlands" is full of calm, layeredbrilliance. Sticking close to the guitar-bass-drums approach, TheWrens strike up soaring harmonies and lasting guitar parts, packingunforgettable moments back-to-back in each track. "Ex-GirlCollection," with its arpeggiated guitar strain and four-partharmony, makes a particularly strong impression. "She Sends Kisses"and "Thirteen Grand" are typical Wrens' songs, with witty, bitterlyrics, huge choruses and complicated pop structuring. "TheMeadowlands" is nearly perfect. The middle of the record dragsslightly, and the band's pop recipes take a few listens to fullydigest. When you do, you'll find The Wrens have crafted anotherwork of art that rivals any other record released in 2003.
