Beriault, Scott named MAC first-team
Three Ball State football players were honored Monday when theMid-American Conference announced its all-conference teams, whichthe league's 14 head coaches selected.
Junior safety Justin Beriault and senior outside linebackerLorenzo Scott were named to the first-team defense, and senioroffensive lineman Travis Barclay was tabbed second-teamoffense.
Beriault, who is second in the MAC and paced the Cardinals withhis 145 tackles, was a second-team honoree in 2002 as an outsidelinebacker. In his three seasons at Ball State, Beriault hasstarted all but one of 35 games.
Scott came back to Muncie for his senior season following asummer of minor league baseball in the Baltimore Orioles'organization.
After leading the Cardinals in tackles each of the previousthree seasons, Scott made 138 stops to rank fourth in the league.He came off the bench in the first four games of his freshmanseason; then he made 42 consecutive starts. His 19 tackles for lossand four forced fumbles led the Cards, and he and Paul Strabavy ledthe team four sacks each. Scott also blocked a field goal in BSU'swin at Kent State.
Barclay, a two-time Academic All-American with a 3.99 GPA,started every game for three-straight seasons. A former walk-on,Barclay played in eight games as a redshirt freshman. During threeseasons, he opened 19 games at right guard and 16 at righttackle.
Northern Illinois kicker Steve Azar was named MAC Special TeamsPlayer of the Year after being named all-league for thefourth-straight year. Central Michigan running back Jerry Seymourwas voted freshman of the year. Coach of the year, as well asoffensive and defensive players of the year, will be announcedtoday.
