The Ball State women's swimming and diving team fell just shortof completing a comeback against Michigan State on Saturday -- ninepoints to be exact. The final score was 126-117 in favor of thevisiting Spartans.
Oh, so close.
The Cardinals fell behind early, as the Spartans won the firstfive events. But Ball State stayed within striking distance byoften finishing in second and third place, including the 400-medleyrelay team's second place effort to kick off the afternoon'smeet.
"One event! Just one event," Seibold-Caudill bemoaned."Basically it was one event (from winning the meet). That's a toughway to go. It was really frustrating."
The team finished with only four first-place finishes, but wereable to pick up points with eight second places. In two events,Ball State swept the top three places, with Jenna Arnold winningthe 200 butterfly and Kait Martin taking the 200 backstroke.
"We did very well overall. The distance did very well,"Seibold-Caudill said.
The Cardinals also won the 400-freestyle relay, and PaigeVernasco completed a successful weekend having all ready won theone-meter diving the previous evening with another first-placefinish.
Friday night, the Cardinal's drilled IUPUI, 102-11, and easedpast St. Louis 77-36 at the IUPUI Natatorium. The Cardinals won 11of the 13 events at the meet, all of which were led by individualsin the individual events. Ball State swept in every freestyleevent.
"We didn't know what was going on in the diving events. I wish Ihad known about the diving, so I could have saved some of ourswimmers for the second day," she said.
Despite being sick, Emily Aubie won the 200 butterfly, andMartin added yet another win in the 200 backstroke. The divingcompetition also belonged to the Cardinals, as Vernasco won theone-meter, and Cassandra Pavlovich took the three-meter.
Both the 200-free relay and 200-medley relay teams won theirevents.
Despite Saturday's disappointment, Seibold-Caudill is verypleased with the team's progression so far this season.
"These kids have been swimming a lot. I have to complement themfor their hard work," she said.
