Despite outplaying 4th seeded Ohio in the opening round of theMid-American Conference tournament, the 5th-seeded Ball State fieldhockey team was handed a loss, ending their season Friday.
"I think the team played an excellent game and I think theyplayed well and hard," head coach Annette Payne said.
"It was a tough loss."
With only 23 seconds left in the first half, Ohio's Kristen Hannscored, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead and the game winning goalover the 5th-seeded Cardinals.
BSU outshot Ohio 9-2 in the second half and had a 12-11 shotadvantage on the game. The Bobcats went on to lose in thechampionship game of the tournament to Louisville, who Ball Statedefeated 2-0 earlier this season.
Sophomore goalie Tracy Bannister notched seven saves whilefreshmen Carla Chiampi had her first defensive save on theseason.
"The team played 100 percent and smart. The ball just didn'tfall our way," Payne said.
The Cardinals lost twice to Ohio earlier this year, the firstcoming at home Oct. 4 in a 1-0 loss and the second away in a 2-1overtime defeat. Friday's victory marked the Bobcats ninth straightdefeat against the Cards.
"This was not just any game; it was the MAC tournament, so weapproached it a little different. The team was motivated," Paynesaid.
Ball State finishes the season with an 8-12 record and a fourthplace rank in the MAC standings. The Cards had lost three out ofthe last four matches heading into the tournament.
