Student Government Association senators are continuing theirefforts to gain support for the construction of a new studentcenter.
A show of senators' hands at Wednesday's SGA meeting showedpresident pro tempore Ben Tietz that a majority of SGA memberssupport the organization's efforts.
The topic was the first discussed at Wednesday's meeting. BruceMorgan, director of the student center and programs and Kay Bales, associate vice president for student life, led the discussion.
They began by giving each senator a timeline of efforts to builda new student center. The timeline began in 1989.
The L.A. Pittenger Student Center was built in 1952 because thecampus was expected to grow south, Morgan said. When the campusgrew north, the student center ended up on the edge of campusinstead of in the middle.
"What's in here is really good, but the location keeps it fromfully realizing its potential," Morgan said.
He said the student center would take 18 months to two years toplan and another 18 months to two years to design. Bales said thefunding for the building must come from private donations becausestate funding will not be available for a non-academicbuilding.
Bales encouraged the senators to continue working on theproject.
"The most important things you can do as student senators istalk to your peers and raise awareness," Bales said.
Bales said the senators should show others that students havebeen talking about this effort for a long time.
Bales suggested senators take a tour of the student center atBowling Green State University, a new facility that opened in2001.
Three other Mid-American Conference schools have new studentcenters in the works. Akron University is looking to open a newcenter in 2004. Eastern Michigan and Ohio University are bothscheduled to open a new facility in 2006. These dates were listedon the handout Bales and Morgan gave senators.
Tietz said aside from the SGA-wide effort for a new studentcenter, committees are moving legislation.
Senators discussed one piece, dealing with notifications foroverdue library materials. The legislation suggests that theUniversity Libraries expand its use of electronic due notices toinclude overdue notices for reserve materials.
The legislation is scheduled to be voted upon at the nextmeeting.
Another piece of legislation suggests that student-trod pathwaysacross grass should be more defined to accomodate student traffic. The legislation uses examples of the dirt path across theUniversity Green and one outside Irving Gym.
The piece will be discussed at the next meeting.
