AT ISSUE: Students need to perform self-exams to detect cancer early

Students need to get in touch ? literally.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is a perfect time for Ball State students to take precautions and perform preventative measures on their bodies.

According to the American Cancer Society, 192,000 Americans will develop breast cancer this year. According to the Society, 40,200 will die from the disease.

Denise Hurt, an employee of Cancer Services of Delaware County, Inc., said that breast cancer doesn't only affect older women. She said that women 20-39 should have professionals perform a clinical breast exam every year and should conduct self breast exams monthly.

Alison Cockerill, a health educator at Ball State involved with awareness events, said, "Students think because they're the age they are, they're not at risk. But it's never too early to take an interest in their health and to start checking their breasts at a young age."

Similarly, men, especially those aged 15-40, need to perform monthly self-exams for testicular cancer, even though the cancer has only a week of awareness devoted to it.

According to tcaw.org, 7,000 young men will have been diagnosed with testicular cancer and over 400 young men will have died from it at the end of 2003. This is greater than the amount of women in that age group who will die from breast cancer.

Though self-exams might make some students squeamish or uncomfortable, they are the simplest, cheapest and least-embarrassing way to test for cancer, and if the act discovers a tumor, it will be worth the discomfort.

During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and later in April during Testicular Cancer Awareness Week, students need to recognize the threats they are facing and begin to react appropriately.//2DfUwD33D"fUf-+DUU+â-áDUDDUfUDUUffD-+fw+â-áffwfUf+â-á+â-¦+â-á3"""f"""33"DD"D-¬+â-á-¬+â-¦-¬-¬+â-¦™-¬-¬f+â-¦+â-¦""3"3"f>>-¬-¬+â-¦+â-â+â-âwU3D3UD"UDUD UDUff+â-áwwff+â-áwUffwUDD3wwfwUUDUDUfDDU3UDUDf3"3D3"3DDU-+"3UU3D3D3"3""3""33"3"3"33UD""3""3+-¬-«'editorial 10.8.03DNEditorial//2...X?2AUDT
