LETTER: Column attacking PETA unwarranted

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to Jeff Nicoson's column full ofstereotypes concerning People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.I commend you on doing some quick research for your article, butyour lack of knowledge becomes obvious halfway through. It beginsto head downhill when you discuss putting animals beforehumans.

Jeff, a human is an animal.

You then attempted to use PETA's complaint to Yassir Arafat asan example. When did any member of PETA say that they had noproblem with killing innocent people? Killing is wrong under allcircumstances, whether it be for war, murder, capital punishment,or dinner. No one agrees with taking innocent lives.

But why use a donkey to do it? If you're set on strapping a bombto something to murder others, make it yourself.

Your comment on Roy Horn was also a stereotype that showed onlyyour view on how others think. I also believe he got what hedeserved. Do you think those tigers were ever caged or hit? Let'ssee someone tie you to a tree or smack you when you don't sit oncommand.

Then came your complaint regarding PETA's stance on "right tolife" issues. You immediately group every member of thisorganization together as having the same views on issues besidesanimal rights. It's People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.Where does abortion fit into that?

I do not worship animals and actually caring about theirsuffering does not reduce my compassion for humans. Every time youdecide to eat meat instead of pasta or bread, you use at leasttwelve times more grain than you needed to. Children in othercountries die every day because they don't even have a single pieceof bread. See the connection? Probably not.

I don't know what sparked your article, but it's rathercoincidental that it ran only days after I decided to protestoutside the Kentucky Fried Chicken here in Muncie. Like any othermember of PETA, I did it to raise awareness of the abuse of animalsfor fur, food, testing and entertainment. I am putting my energyinto something I believe is worthwhile.

Take your own advice and put your energy into something otherthan columns full of assumptions.
