SOCCER: Cardinals seek revenge in match against IPFW Mastadons

The women's soccer team (0-1) is back home Wednesday to play IPFW (2-1).

Last season, the Mastodons struggled to a 3-15 finish, but IPFW managed to tie the Cardinals 1-1 in double overtime.

Head coach Ron Rainey said he sees several similarities in the infancy of the Mastodons' program and the early years of the soccer program at Ball State.-á

Rainey said young programs must upset more powerful opponents.

Rainey said he sees this as a game that will challenge his team because of IPFW's organization and defensive tactics.

"Their defense is hard to get behind," Rainey said, referring to the 2002 match. "They gave us fits."

Rainey said he hopes to see a sense of revenge from his team because of the outcome of last season's game.-á

In 2002 Ball State outshot IPFW 21-13, but total shots on goal were even at eight.-á

This year the Mastodons' offensive attack should do more to alleviate the pressure of the Cardinals offensive attack.-á

The Mastodons enter Wednesday's match with wins over Central Michigan and Howard.-á IPFW scored six goals in the two victories.-á Lindsay Williamson scored two of the goals.-á IPFW has outshot its opponents 38-25 in the first three games of the season.

On paper Ball State appears to be the favorite going into the match, but Rainey said no favorites exists this early in the year.-á While IPFW has its offense in high gear entering the game, the Cardinals will look to regain their offensive attack after being held to five shots and being shutout by Butler on Friday.
