OUR VIEW: Students shouldn't stereotype BSU greeks

AT ISSUE: Ball State's fraternities avoid the appalling behavior occurring on other campuses

Ball State's greek population has taken a few shots.

It has repeatedly been a target of false stereotypes and thebutt of misinformed jokes.

And though a few of our fraternities have occasionally foundtrouble, like Beta Theta Pi's expulsion because of defaulted loans, the greeks do more for the campus and the community than manystudents realize.

Plus, the Interfraternity Council's announced on Tuesday that anew scholarship program will require new members to participate insupervised studying. This proves the greeks at Ball State arestriving to become more than party hosts.

They deserve more credit, especially if we look at what somefraternities on other campuses are busy with:

Duke University's Sigma Chi fraternity faced a rally protestingits Sept. 13 "Drunk Mexican" party. The party came complete withinvitations resembling expired green cards and a mock border-patrolcheckpoint at the door.

In 2001, the Alpha Tau Omega chapter at the University ofMississippi was suspended after an offensive photograph taken attheir annual Halloween party surfaced online. The picture depicteda member dressed as a policeman pointing a gun at one of hisfraternity brothers, who was clad in blackface and kneeling andpretending to pick cotton.

And at the University of Auburn, members of Beta Theta Pi andDelta Sigma Phi were suspended for wearing racially offensiveHalloween costumes. At Delta Sigma Phi, one member was dressed inKu Klux Klan attire, and another wore FUBU clothes and a noosearound his neck.

This is ridiculous, appalling behavior.

Ball State's fraternities aren't perfect, but no chapter hasever resorted to these kinds of pathetic, racist slights.

So while irresponsible behavior threatens to destroy thestandards and traditions of so many fraternities on other campuses, let's be glad our greeks have some tact.
