MEN'S GOLF: Team recovers in final round to place fourth

Coach Fleck: Strong effort needed from all BSU players

After a slow start, the Ball State men's golf team recovered inthe final round and put forth their best round of golf in the fallseason at the Hoosier Invitational.

The Cards' 288 in the final round at the invitational was thesecond lowest team score on Sunday. The team shot a 590 through thefirst two rounds on Saturday.

"I was pleased with Sunday's effort. We did a really good job,"head coach Mike Fleck said.

"Our effort on Saturday was not very good. We dug ourselves apretty deep hole after the first day."

The team finished in a tie for fourth with Bowling Green as bothshot a three round score of 878.

BSU was led by sophomore Patrick Wilkes-Krier, who tied forfifth overall and had a tournament total of 213 (72-69-72).

After shooting 75 and 74 in the first two rounds, sophomoreBrandon Boomsma finished strong shooting a 69 in the final roundand tying for 12th overall.

Behind him was freshman teammate C.D. Hockersmith in a tie for19th and a three round total of 220 (71-73-76).

In last weekend's Northern Intercollegiate, Ball State startedstrong but was unable to capitalize in the final round, finishingninth after entering the final round in fifth place.

"If we want to play at the level we expect to play at, we haveto have a collective team effort. Not only that we have to be in itfrom the start, but we have to go out and do everything we can toput up the lowest score possible for five guys," Fleck said.

The Cards will continue their 2003 fall season as host of theEarl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Player's Club in Yorktown,Ind.
