LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Downloading music does not help industry

Dear Editor,

As a board member and representative of the American Federationof Musicians, Local 245, Muncie, Indiana, I would like to make thefollowing comments regarding the column by Ben McShane of Sept. 17concerning the illegal reproduction and distribution of copyrightedmaterials, in this case music.

Mr. McShane argues that by stealing from recording companies andlegitimate distributors, you are somehow aiding musicians ingeneral. We do not agree. This is like arguing that by sneakinginto a major-league athletics event, you are improving the qualityof play in the minor leagues.

Contrary to anything Mr. McShane has to say, illegal downloadingof music hurts the artists and the industry. Encouraging anyone todo so is irresponsible. If Mr. McShane genuinely wants to helpsupport local musicians and live music, we suggest that he stopspending his time listening to pirated recordings and go hear alive band.
