LETTER: Tom Green issue important

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the "Our View" editorial titled, "Get your priorities straight."

Let me first say that I have had a love-hate relationship with this paper since I started reading it last year. Some of the articles I respect deeply and love to read - such as those on the Forum page.

However, I have lost much of that respect because you took a stab at something I believe in, which is getting my favorite actor/comedian/funnyman Tom Green back on the air.

Whether it be for lack of something to have a "view" about or simply trying to negatively entice responses for further Forum editorials, this editorial is, at the least, outrageous.

You should not chastise people for standing up for what they believe in, whatever it may be. If people want to rally for Funcie roads, athletic programs and education budgets, then let them. If people want to voice their opinion on a topic they feel necessary, be it Tom Green or a dull bell tower, let them and applaud, for as journalists you should defend, more than anyone, the freedom of speech.

Don't make an editorial belitting a show people may enjoy by calling it "bad." And don't throw in a respectable petition (for the dull and almost foreboding Shafer Tower) for no apparent reason other than to add credibility to an otherwise demeaning rant.

I agree that more people should get involved in more pressing issues with such zeal, but to undermine what is actually going on here at Ball State is counter-productive. I, for one, would be less likely to participate in any rally or petition with such an ominous paper covering us. I, frankly, would not trust the DAILY NEWS.

In a nutshell - lighten up. Don't toss sticks and stones. Continue give us Your View, but if it takes the tone of nagging parents, like "Get your priorities straight" did, then Your Views will fall on deaf ears.
