LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sept. 11 should be remembered, passed on

I am writing in response to two opinions voiced by studentsregarding how 9/11 should be remembered (specifically Mr. Woodfinand Ms. Russell). Perhaps if these individuals had family memberswho were killed that day, they would feel differently. While I didnot lose anyone, I am still greatly hurt by the country's loss. Ihave two brothers and a sister who are firemen, and twobrothers-in-law who are police officers, and they all work in thesame city. I cannot fathom the possibility of losing them all in asingle event. With the number of civil servants killed that daytrying to save others, I believe 9/11 should be considered aholiday by all Americans, not because it is mandated, but becauseit is the right thing to do. We should each reverently mourn onthis day, every year, for the rest of our lives. We should also bereminded of it and what was sacrificed every time a fire engine ora police cruiser passes by. Someday, we should pass on the story ofliving through 9/11/01 to the generations who didn't experienceit.
