LETTER: McKinley road plans available for viewing

Dear Editor

I would like to take this opportunity to respond to a comment in Friday's editorial. The editorial about priorities states, "Why not contact Mayor Canan and persuade him to raise money to repair and re-pave McKinley Avenue?" The reconstruction of McKinley is part of a large federally funded project to improve student safety on McKinley and Riverside Avenues. This project has completed the design phase and is being approved by INDOT. Because this is a large project it will be broken into 4 phases, the first phase being the reconstruction of McKinley from Riverside to Neely. This will include splitting the traffic so that it will flow around both sides of the bell tower, new sidewalks and a median. This project is scheduled for 2004. Anyone interested in seeing the entire plan can go to the Metropolitan Plan Commission office on the second floor of the county building to view it.

Thank you for allowing me to respond.

Dan Canan

Mayor -- City of Muncie
