Interfraternity Council adds 190 members to ranks

Membership might increase despite loss of three houses

The Interfraternity Council added about 190 members to its ranksduring recruitment week, despite losing three houses lastsemester.

By the end of recruitment on Sept. 14, IFC snagged 20-morepotential members than it did last year, Jeff Duerstock, vicepresident of public relations and marketing for IFC, said.

"A lot of houses got what they wanted," he said. "We got somegood people."

Losing the Theta Zi, Beta Theta Pi and Delta Chi houses did notdeter potential members, Duerstock said.

The recruits won't become official "brothers" until new-memberforms are filled out and sent to the IFC for evaluation, Duerstocksaid. Potential members must have a 2.5 GPA or higher, an SAT scoreof 1150 or an ACT of 23, and be active in the community, Duerstocksaid.

"It went great," Brad Nichols, recruitment chairman of the IFC,said. "We had a lot of guys come out."

Nichols said he was impressed that so many people had strongacademics and campus involvement.

Duerstock said he credited new recruitment methods for thisyear's success. The IFC sent out two mailings during the summer topotential greeks, ran ads in Beginnings, an orientationguide, and selected a unifying "Go Greek" T-shirt slogan for allhouses, Duerstock said.

Also, residence halls asked IFC representatives to speak tostudents about greek life, another first for the year, Duerstocksaid. Through these talks, he said, IFC members dispelled mythsabout greek life.

"Some people get the wrong perception because of shows on MTV,"Duerstock said. "But it's just not true."

According to Duerstock, contradicting stereotypes and improvingmembers' grade-point averages will be the focus for the IFC thisyear.

The IFC will start a scholarship program for new members thisyear in response to last year's grade-point evaluations.

"We're not where we want to be," Duerstock said.

According to the IFC Web site, the program will require membersto complete three hours of supervised studying in the LearningCenter each week. Five options are available to complete thisrequirement:

• Small-group tutoring sessions

• Supplemental-instruction sessions

• Individual-study hours

• IFC workshops that focus on study skills and timemanagement

• Meetings with the director of the Learning Center.

"Hopefully it will get the GPA up," Nichols said. "These guys(the new recruits) are the future leaders of the IFC."

The scholarship program will be structured much like theFreshman Connections program, Duerstock said. Greeks will bematched with others who have the same core classes or majors.
