BSU assistant to compete at U.S. Open

WOMEN'S GOLF

With her career as a student over, Ball State assistant women's golf coach Abby Pearson is going to try to earn a spot on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour. Her journey will begin today at the tour's biggest event: the Women's U.S. Open.

Pearson, who graduated from Ball State in May with a communication studies degree, will go to the LPGA qualifying school in August with hopes of becoming a full-time member of the tour. She planned on using the U.S. Open Qualifier in Chicago last month as a warmup for the school, but instead tied for third and won a spot in the Open.

Before coming to Ball State, Pearson played on the Futures Tour from 1995 to 2000. While on the Futures Tour, she won three events and had five second-place finishes. Pearson currently ranks 22nd on that tour's all-time money list.

Pearson also had a stellar college career as a member of the Tennessee Volunteers from 1992 to 1994. In 1993, she became Tennessee's first women's golf All-American after being named to the second-team. That same year, she set a course record at the 1993 NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., by shooting a 67.

This year's U.S. Open will take place in Portland, Ore., at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
