Web site includes information on Garfield's birthday, tools to create original comic strips

Users can experience everything from making their own comic strip to learning more about the upcoming Garfield movie on Garfield.com.

"Garfield.com is a place where we expect people to come to find out everything they want to know about Garfield," senior vice president of operations at Paws, Inc. Madelyn Ferris said.

After launching Garfield.com in 1997, the Web site has grown to receiving more than 12 million page views a month, she said.

The daily comic is the site's most visited link, Ferris said. The animated e-cards and the fun and games section come in second and third, respectively.

She said that though the Web game "Lasagna from Heaven" is primitive, technologically speaking, it remains the favorite game among users.

The site includes monthly updates including information on Garfield's 25th Birthday Bash.

"We want to let people know that we are having a party," she said.

There are about 300 pieces of mail coming in everyday via Garfield.com, about 90 percent of that being fan mail, Ferris said.

There are many different aspects to making the Web site, she said. An animator, a graphic designer and a songwriter are just a few people that Paws, Inc. employs for its Web site.

"Playing a song while reading a card or playing a game really makes a difference," Ferris said.

The Web crew is working on a project to upgrade the current site.

"The new Web site will feature more flash animation," she said. "This is the direction most sites are taking now."

Webmasters will be enhancing the fun and games section by adding more games and refining the old ones, she said.

"The new site should be more user-friendly and more interesting," she said.

The new Garfield.com is expected to be launched by September, she said.
