Students can be so... catty

College students reflect on the fat cat's best moments

Some students are never too old to take a minute to read a "Garfield" comic.

"I read the comic every chance I get because it's cute and funny," junior Bojana Kljajic said.

"When I was growing up, my brother and I would fight over the comics page," senior David Whitely said. "'Garfield' was the bomb of the page. But now we just fight over the sports page."

Besides the comic strip, the cartoon, which debuted in 1988, was also a favorite past time in the mix of Saturday morning cartoons and commercials.

"I remember him (Garfield) trying to send Nermal away all the time; that was amusing," senior Kira Flint said.

Throughout the years "Garfield and Friends" grew from just being Garfield, Odie and John Arbuckle to a series of extended relatives and farm animals.

"We watched it on TV when I was younger and had time for cartoons," sophomore Larry Wade said.

Not everyone favored Garfield over his yellow, long tongued, side-kick Odie.

"I guess I just have always favored dogs," sophomore Melissa Fear said.

Fear said Garfield was well-liked because of the show's commonplace and natural setting.

"To me, the biggest difference (between cartoons then and now) today is more technology is used in the shows," Fear said. "Garfield was so simple."

"'Garfield' is a clean show," senior Susan Smith said. "Some cartoons today denounce parents."

Physical processing supervisor Heather Robbins said "Garfield" was more of an adult show with jokes that older audiences grasp more easily.

"Garfield" also had animated specials surrounding holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Halloween.

"I liked the Christmas special and how it came on all the time around Charlie Brown and the Grinch," senior Daniel Marshall said. One of Marshall's favorite character's was John Arbuckle's grandmother.

"I think it's cool that Jim Davis got national attention for his work," Smith said. "You have to give him credit."

If you have mixed emotions about Garfield celebrating his 25th birthday no need to worry. Garfield himself has already decided for you.

"To know me is to love me."

A few quotes from the fat-cat himself...

"I used to be perfect, now I'm even better!"

"I don't do perky."

"I'm not messy, I'm organizationally challenged."

"It's been one of those days all week!"

"NO, next question."

"To know me is to love me."

"I work hard, I don't work miracles."

"It's tough being this adorable."

"I don't do conformity."

"I'm not overweight, I'm undertall."

"I just love carry-out."

"I'll rise but I won't talk."

"Let's talk golf. You lie first."

"I don't do ordinary."
