Our View: Show of unity

AT ISSUE: Spectrum's drag show exemplifies the coming-together Ball State students should exhibit more often

Spectrum, Ball State's gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied student association hosted a drag show Saturday evening. The show, titled "Spring Queening," was part of "Cleaning out the Closet Week," a week of events to gain awareness for students of all sexual orientations.

The event was a success for a number of reasons.

The obvious would be that the show doubled as fund-raising activity for A Better Way battered women's shelter. The show raised $205 for A Better Way, said Heather Workman, Spectrum treasurer.

The less obvious, but still important reason, is the support shown by Ball State students.

Workman said the group did not take a head count but estimates between 300 and 500 people attended the event.

The audience members were not just Spectrum members.

A co-host asked attendees to raise their hands if they were straight, and many did.

"We had gays, lesbians and so many straight people," Workman said.

Audience members said people from other Indiana universities also attended the show.

For many, Workman said, it was their first drag show.

This speaks volumes for the university.

It shows the students are willing to support diversity and try new things to exhibit that support.

Now it us up to the students to challenge themselves to increase the attendance at multicultural events. Diversity is an important part of the overall college experience.

Through many events throughout the school year, students are given the chance to support fellow classmates.

It looks as though they are finally taking that opportunity. Hopefully, this attitude will continue for all diverse events.
