BSU wins 3 events at Butler meet

The women's track team returned from the Indy Relays Saturday in a meet that featured three first-place finishes for the team.

The meet, hosted by Butler University, was non-scored, meaning that individual results rather than team results were measured.

Patricia Soman was in her usual dominant form with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.07, only .01 behind the winner.

Soman also took first place in the 200-meter dash, ahead of the closest competitor by nearly one second.

"We needed to improve our marks, and for the most part we didn't. We need more than one or two people performing well in order to succeed," head coach Sue Parks said.

Ball State also placed high in the 400-meter dash, continuing its domination in the sprinting events this season. With a time of 57.28, Angka Morris took second in the 400-meter.

The Cardinals posted solid results in the 1,500-meter run as senior Katie Nowak took third with a time of 4:38.32. Behind her in fifth and sixth were freshman Nicole Hartford and senior Lindsay Keazer.

Other highlights of the meet were the second- and fourth-place finishes by freshmen Jennifer McCoy and Bridgett Coleman, respectively.

Finishing in first place and 1.5 seconds above the competition was Ball State's 4x100-meter relay team. Participating in the 4x100 relay for Ball State were Angka Morris, Patricia Soman, Kelly Kirby and Jennifer Dennie. The 4x400 relay team also finished second in its event with a time of 3:55.52.

Ball State is six meets into the season with only four remaining in the regular season, and Parks feels it is high time for the Cards to put together a good team effort.

"We need more than one or two people performing well in order to succeed. We just haven't had a good team effort, and time is running out," Parks said.

The Cards will continue their season next weekend at the Drake Relays, to take place in Des Moines, Iowa.
