Women's track team heads to Kent State

Soman places 11th in world with jump of almost 21 feet

The women's track and field team travels to Kent, Ohio, this Saturday to compete in the non-scoring Kent State Invitational.

The Cardinals look to improve on their four first place performances at the non-scoring Smith Barney Invitational last Saturday.

"Improvement is the name of the game in track and field," head coach Sue Parks said. "Every week we want to take the program to the next level by improving our seed times."

Two of the first place finishes at the Smith Barney Invitational came from this week's Mid-American Conference track and field athlete of the week Patricia Soman.

Her first-place jump of 20-10 1/2 in the long jump is currently tied for 11th in the world, according to the International Amateur Athletics Association.

This mark along with her other first place jump of 42-6 14 in the triple-jump are both school records and NCAA provisional marks.

"She has really bounced back from her knee surgery from last year," Parks said. "She has taken her game to a new level and what she is doing now is just amazing. Patricia is definitely the most dominant jumper in the MAC right now."

The Cardinals will be testing out the new facilities at Kent State, which is also the location of the MAC championships this year. The team will also be testing the Golden Flashes who were the MAC's 2002 Outdoor Champions.

"Kent State is strong this year," Parks said. "They took the outdoor championship and are easily in the top five teams in the MAC right now."

Parks said she is happy with where her team is right now.

"We are looking good so far," Parks said. "We just have to stay healthy and keeping improving and stay focused."

The Cardinals are currently ranked 23rd by Trackwire 25 (based on NCAA qualifying competition performances and information provided by coaches).-¦
