Students staying warm with latest flicks

During winter, many students turn to local video stores, movies.

After a long week of classes, plans don't always include hitting the bars or partying. Staying in and watching movies can be more relaxing, especially in the winter months.

"Sometimes you just don't feel like going out," freshman Sarah Avila said. "In cases like that, the best thing to do is turn on the TV or rent a video."

According to Jocelyn Lisek, employee of Family Video on Tillotson, this has been a big week for movie releases.

"Some of the titles that came out this week did really well in theaters, like 'Spy Kids 2' and 'One Hour Photo,'" Lisek said. "'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' came out last week, and it's also very popular right now."

Ball State's Housing and Residence Life also provides a movie channel for on-campus residents. The movies chosen are based on a contract with a company called Residence Life Cinema. The company provides rights for playing copyrighted material on the channel.

"A group of students works as a consulting group to help select the movies we play each month," said Alan Hargrave, director of HRL. "We're given a list of available titles to choose from, and they pick which ones to show each month."

The movie channel doesn't necessarily appeal to only traditional college-age students. Because campus apartment residents with children also access the channel, G-rated films are generally offered each month.

"We try to appeal to children and those who are young at heart," Hargrave said. "We show these kinds of movies during after-school hours for students with families."

The consulting group also takes into consideration the titles suggested by students and professors, although they can only show movies if Residence Life Cinema has the rights to them. To request a movie, visit http://web.bsu.edu/housing-/contact.html.

In addition to the choices provided by local video rental stores and HRL's movie channel, several basic cable channels include older movies in their weekend programming. Some of the best channels for movies on weekends are TBS, USA and WGN.

Students who would rather go out to see a movie can take advantage of the student discounts at local theaters and the Muncie Dollar Cinema in the mall. Visit movies.yahoo.com to find movies playing in Muncie and nearby cities.
