Letter to the editor: Slates should 'retract claws,'focus on important issues

Dear Editor,

After attending the recent SGA debate, I left feeling confused and somewhat disgusted by what took place during the debate. Basically, I just wanted to hit something.-á-á

It was not the questions and responses dealing with things like multiculturalism or relationships between Muncie and Ball State. Those were interesting, and I enjoyed hearing both sides. I was bothered by the contradiction and lack of sportsmanship, not so much on the Manship side, but on the Loving side.-á

For example, on a question regarding student involvement in SGA, Loving went on to say they are trying to get more students involved. He repeatedly said this in various ways, but then he went on to say that "politics is complicated" and they cannot "dumb" up the legislation process.

I do not think making things easier for people to understand when coming into a situation is dumbing it up. People do not want to get involved in something that seems complicated. Why not summarize and outline things that seem complicated, rather than plug in the minute details.

This is not how they choose to handle the question though; instead, they insulted the intelligence of those too "dumb" to understand complicated legislative documents right off the bat. That is most of Ball State's student body.

Regarding lack of sportsmanship, Nick Loving, in his recent quote in the Daily News, best illustrates this.

"We won the debate. Our platform issues are better, their commitment to diversity can be questioned, and their ability to run SGA should be a serious question."-á

As far as I was concerned, as well as my peers around me, no one won the debate. Both platforms were well thought out and organized. Not only that, but I applaud the Manship slate for admitting their downfalls, and they are fully capable of running SGA well, due to their experience with other organizations. As for the Loving slate, they are equally able to run SGA well, but shame on them for letting their egos get in the way of what issues are truly relevant.-á

So slates, please retract those claws and keep focus on what is truly important -- the student body.
