Cardinals beat two teams to finish regular season

BSU defeated Miami and Western Michigan Friday.

The Ball State women's track and field team completed its regular indoor season Friday with a victory at the three-team home meet held at the Field and Sports building.

The Cardinals (106.5) defeated the Miami RedHawks (100) and the Western Michigan Broncos (91.5).

The Cardinals ended the regular season with five first place finishes. Senior Patricia Soman had two of the five. One first-place finish was in the triple jump in which she had a jump of 41-10 34. Sophomore Ashley Gillies placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 38-5.

Soman's other first-place finish was in the long jump. Her winning jump of 21-1 12 was good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Championships. Junior Jennifer Dennie (18-7 14) and freshman Jennifer McCoy (17-8 14) took first and second places in the long jump.

Junior Christine Velgersdyk won the high jump with a leap of 5-7 34. Her mark was a season best for the Cardinals. Senior Melissa Smith finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 10-6.

Three Cardinals also took the top three spots in the 55-meter dash. Senior Angka Morris ran a season best 6.98 to take first place. Second place was occupied by Soman with a time of 7.01, and Dennie finished third with a time of 7.16. Morris added the 200-meter dash title with a time of 25.08.

Senior Natasha Lothery took third in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.63. Senior Katie Nowak placed third in the mile run with a time of 5:05.79. Sophomores Sara Huddleston (10:13.04) and Aubrey Gaffer (10:26.05) finished second and third in the 3,000-meter run.

The next test for the Cardinals is the Mid-American Conference Indoor Champion-ships at Kent, Ohio, this Friday.
