Women's track team faces tough challenge

After another strong performance last weekend at the Purdue Open, the women's track team heads north to Notre Dame, where it will challenge the Fighting Irish and Western Michigan in the Notre Dame Triangular today.

This is Ball State's first scoring meet this season and the team's toughest challenge to date. The Cardinals' performance last weekend included five first place finishes and top-fives in 16 of 17 events.

"The travel will be good for us," Coach Sue Parks said. "We will relax on the bus and get focused for the meet."

It will take plenty of focus to beat Notre Dame. The Irish took the Big East Indoor Championship last year and are just as tough this year in all aspects. Parks knows what will be needed of her team to stay in contention.

"We have a couple of people running multiple events," she said. "We don't have to win every meet as much as we have to place to stay competitive."

One tough event will be the 1600 relay, where Ball State's "A" team hasn't lost this year. Notre Dame qualified it's team to NCAAs last year, and Western Michigan has posted the MAC's best time this year.

With strong performances in the first two weeks, Parks is pleased with what she is seeing.

"It's good to see us off to a strong start. I am really pleased with Jennifer McCoy so far. She came up with a big win against a tough Purdue team. It's good to see a freshman step up."

"It will be tough," she said. "Notre Dame has great sprinters and relays. We can't take Western Michigan lightly, either. You just don't want to lose to a conference rival."
