Women win 10 of 15 events

Soman sets record in long jump, Cards send strong message.

If the Ball State Open was a team scoring meet, the women's track and field team would have run away with a victory.

But instead of a victory the team sent a message to its future opponents. This message - victories in 10 of 15 events - clearly states the Cardinals are focused and want another Mid-American Conference championship.

Many of the women had noteworthy performances, but one that stood out was senior Patricia Soman. Not only did she help the 4x200 team to a first-place finish (1:40.57), but she also placed first in the triple jump (20-4 1/4) and the long jump. She placed her name in the Ball State indoor record book by setting the school record in the long jump with a leap of 20-4 1?2, an NCAA provisional qualification mark.

Other Cardinals that posted first place finishes were Bridgett Coleman and Jennifer McCoy in the 60 meter hurdles (9.07), Natasha Lothery (800, 2:14.2), Angka Morris (60, 7.64), Crystal Winfrey (400, 58.55), Ashley Gillies (high jump, 5-6) and Jill Scully (3000, 10:17.93).

Also taking first place was the 4x200 "A" relay team and the 4x400 "A" team of Morris, Coleman, Lothery and Winfrey with a time of (3:57.81). A second place finisher worth mentioning is senior Katie Nowak in second in the mile. She fell short of victory by less than two seconds to Dian Aiansley of Illinois State (5:08.58).
