Our View: Call for donations

AT ISSUE: Fire destroys Muncie apartment complex, leaving many residents without homes, belongings.

When flames engulfed a west-side Muncie apartment building on Tuesday afternoon, residents were forced into the cold, where they could only watch as their homes were destroyed.

The fire destroyed the two-story building at Colonial Crest Apartments, 405 S. Morrison Road. Luckily, no one was injured. However, the private property losses were substantial and tragic.

One resident in particular rushed out without shoes and stood in the snow in her bare feet. That is, until Holly Beckett, a senior psychology major, offered her a pair of shoes and a coat.

In addition to Beckett's generosity, managers of several Muncie area apartment complexes called Colonial Crest management to offer help. While firefighters battled the blaze, representatives of the local chapter of the American Red Cross arrived to help those whose homes were damaged or destroyed.

At one point, even Muncie Mayor Dan Canan stopped by to survey the scene.

Although severe any time of year, the fact that this fire occurred in the midst of winter means that those who lost their homes and property are all the more in need.

With that in mind, this is a call for more Ball State students to show their generosity, as Holly Beckett did. Donations can be made to the local chapter of the American Red Cross, 325 E. Washington St., (765) 284-3361.

This is the worst time of year to have a fire destroy a home.

This is, however, the best time of year to donate.
