Moore wins Unity crown

Unity Week came to a close Saturday with the crowning of Miss Unity, TaNesha Moore.

Moore brought tears to the eyes of the audience with her talent, a song in tribute to those who had affected her life. A visual presentation flashed pictures of her father, friends and music stars Aaliyah and Run DMC's Jam Master Jay. She also won the award for highest advertisement sales.

Six women competed in Saturday's three-and-a-half hour pageant. The competition featured group dance scenes, individual talent, impromptu questions and an escort scene.

Each contestant had a male escort who presented her to the audience and judges. The escorts explained how the contestant they represented embodied unity.

Michelle Hudson, Miss Unity 2002, said the goal of Miss Unity is to promote diversity and unity on Ball State's campus.

Hudson said she enjoyed her reign as Miss Unity 2002.

"My favorite part was getting to encourage other people," Hudson said.

The competition is unique because it has both male and female divisions, Candace Stewart, co-chairwoman of the pageant, said.

Throughout the pageant, a full Pruis Hall spent time on its feet, clapping and cheering for the contestants.

One contestant, RaSheda Kelly, performed "Wind Beneath My Wings" a cappella because of technical difficulties and received a standing ovation from the audience. Kelly finished as second runner-up and was named Miss Congeniality.

Other talents included a poetry reading, dances, and singing.

Before the pageant, the women had to complete a written essay and raise at least $400 in advertisements for the program. The women also participated in judges' interviews and community service projects.

During her impromptu interview, Moore was asked what two events influenced her life. She said the first was giving her life to Jesus Christ.

"I daily strive to be more and more holy," Moore said. "The second is the birth of my brother."

Moore's brother, who was born with Down syndrome, had an impact on her.

"He taught my family how to love and appreciate more and more each day," Moore said.
